Per pound of body weight, a small breed dogs energy requirements are more than twice that of large breed dogs, especially during gestation or lactation. At the same time, excess calories may increase the risk of obesity in the small breed adult dog.
The teeth and jaws of the small breed dog are significantly smaller than those of a large breed dog. And they may be more prone to oral health problems.
