Between the 4th and 12th weeks, baby dogs go through a critical period. The immunity transmitted by the colostrum (first milk) gradually decreases to reach a level where it is almost undetectable after the 4th week; this is called the immunity gap.
A baby dog has difficulties in grasping kibbles that are too large or too hard. To help it grasp and eat, the kibbles should have a suitable shape and texture for size of the teeth and strength of the jaws.
The digestive capacities of the baby dog slowly develop with age. A baby dogs ability to digest starch is only 5-10% of the adult dog. Up to the age of three months, the digestion of the baby dog is still delicate; a highly digestible food rich in proteins may help to prevent digestive disorders like diarrhea.
